You can grow your own food. And we can help!

West Alice Community Garden

Faith United Methodist Church (FUMC) has partnered with members of The Samoan Assembly of God Congregation and interested neighbors to form a community garden under the name of “West Alice Community Garden.”  It has been the ongoing mission of FUMC to support and provide for numerous organizations that serve families and individuals in need. Our goal is two-fold:  to garden collectively to grow healthy produce for contribution to these organizations and to provide food security through the provision of allotment plots.

The land provided to the garden is a large abandoned playground area that was a foot deep in sand.  In November a crew of volunteers demolished the playground equipment and on December 18 a crew from Valley Metro Light Rail came in with a front loader to remove a good portion of that sand and replaced it with dirt.   Following that, our core group of gardeners got together to build eight frames for raised beds.  We have been blessed with donations small donations of cash and materials to get us this far but irrigation is our next biggest hurdle.  Our goal is to dedicate the garden and be ready to plant on February 15th, 2014.
