I use the square-foot gardening method. This is my first year with an actual garden going. This method has proven to be very easy to maintain. =)

This is not a good tomato year.Just counted 23 tomatoes on my 10 plants,all in all.I still hope they will make some more.The good news: the eggplants have finally decided to produce fruit....

I made Sungold Tomato Preserves today! The 6 plants were started from seed in January and have kept me supplied with plenty of salad and pasta tomatoes recently. After putting the jars in to process, I sampled what remained in the cooking pot and to me, they taste remarkably like peach preserves. If you have an abundance of Sungold tomatoes, the preserves are easy to make. 4 pounds Sungold tomatoes 3 cups of sugar 1/2 cup lemon juice (@ 4 Meyer lemons) Cook these together over high heat for 30-35 minutes until they barely slide off the spoon, stirring constantly. Ladle into six sterilized 1/2 pint jars, wipe rims, and place lids and rings on until finger tight. Process for 10 minutes in a boiling water bath canner with water level 2 inches above the lids. Remove jars with a jar lifter and set them on a dry towel on your counter. Let cool 12-24 hours then test the lids to ensure they sealed. Enjoy your gardening /canning sucess! I can't wait to try these on a scone, toast, or a pancake.

About 1/3 of the 102 pots are growing companion plants that are said to protect and enhance the summer veggies AND that particular 1/3 are also edible and some, medicinal, themselves; Basil, Lemon Balm, Marigold, Rosemary, Tarragon, Yarrow and Wormwood. After a sniffing testing of Wormwood, about which is said, to have an odor that drives all sorts of animals out of the garden area, I'd have to agree... "Peeyoooooo"!! Let's hope it works on raccoons and possums and squirrels, too…..

I finally planted tomato starts last weekend. This late spring, we have been having weather that is 10 degrees below normal, so I am currently tenting the tomatoes with row cover. Even though it's cold, I'm going to go ahead and plant pole beans today. Hopefully, we'll get through our unseasonably cold weather soon!

Spring crops finished.All in all, 16,5 kg/36,4 lbs of organic vegetables off 8 sq m/85 sq ft since 1/1/12. Recently expanded to 10 sq m.
