40 Asparagus Crowns seems like a lot, but can there really be too much asparagus?
not if they are homegrown organically.
I would probably eat at least 1/2 lb. raw while harvesting for the table and pickling. Never too much as Antonis responded. Stay natural, David
I have a question for you...hope you can help! This is my fist year attempting asparagus. I bought two small containers from Home Depot...They each have about 20-30 asparagus ferns growing. Do I need to thin them out before I plant them, and how? DOes each one of those ferns become a crown? I clearly didn't think this out before I bought them...obviously an impulse buy! ;) However, I would really like them to be successful. Any insight?
There's never too much asparagus!
@ question > For me, your question raises some questions > 1. Are these Home Depot asparagus ferns meant to be edible? Because there is a different, lovely *asparagus fern* sold in HD plant departments which is an ornamental plant. 2. If they are the edible kind of asparagus fern, try sliding the root-mass out of the pot to see the size of the roots. Asparagus roots that are ready for planting have many roots coming down out of the crown & the smallest roots-diameter I have seen sold for planting are ~ 1/8". 3. If they are smaller & need to be separated now & grown on before setting them out farther apart in asparagus rows - I would ask myself if they are worth that much time, space & effort? If this is an edible variety, it sounds like they were pot-sown from seed. Are they a named eating variety? I will check back to see if your asparagus ferns are from the edible variety ... :-)
