SMCA Gardens & Outdoor Environmental Classroom
The mission of our school project is to educate our students and the community about sustainability and conservation, food systems and to help all gain an appreciation and understanding of the path of food from seed to plate. We are working to expand last spring’s 5th grade garden project into a full outdoor sustainable environmental classroom that can be utilized by all grade levels. The garden and education demonstration areas will provide meaningful hands-on learning occasions for our students and opportunities for community engagement. Grant funds will be used toward the purchase of necessary tools for gardening, carts/wheelbarrows and storage shed. In addition, a shade/canopy for the classroom area is required due to the nature of the southwest Florida climate. It is very important to us to nurture a partnership with our community. As a relatively young school in the area, we would like to be able to promote a project that will excite the students at school, and through their excitement inspire our parents to become involved and take ownership and pride in our school just as the students do. We are very pleased with the support that we have received so far, but understand that it is going to require more funds and materials to truly reach our vision. We realize that while this project is ambitious we fully believe that the return in ecological awareness and the sense of community the project will foster will be worth the effort and cost.
KGI is a nonprofit community of over 30,000 people who are growing some of our own food and helping others to do the same.
