Seniors in the Sun Garden

Seniors in the Sun will be a brand new garden project at Village of Hillside!  Our community members live independently and we work hard to overcome one of the biggest obstacles for successful, active senior living - social isolation.  We envision the garden being a hub of community involvement, where seniors from the four buildings can gather with a shared goal.  It also furthers our larger community's commitment to improving awareness of and access to locally produced food.  We envision four elevated beds measuring 3'x10' each with sufficient space to allow for assistive devices (walkers, canes) to be used.  The entire garden must be enclosed with deer fencing as we are in a wildlife dense area.  Each bed would have a theme (soup, salsa, salad, pizza) that would result in the bounty being used for a community meal at the end of the season.

The choice to make the garden communal will allow all of our residents to benefit from not only the crops, but from the social interaction opportunities.  Even if a senior is unable to do "hands on" planting and weeding, they will be able to offer ideas and be part of the activity around the garden.  And of course, our entire community will be part of each of the four meals we plan to make with the fruits of the garden labor!
