Senior Community Garden

The Madison-Mayodan Recreation Commission (Department) (non-profit-governmentkl) is in the process of planning to construct a series of 10-10' x 10' garden plots (raised beds) behind the main recreation building located in Mayodan, NC.  Seniors, along with their siblings, will tend the garden and 75% of the food will be donated to a local food bank.  The rest will be retained by the seniors tending the gardens as a source of healthy foods.  All materials to maintain these gardens will be managed by employees of the Madison-Mayodan Recreation Commission (Department)

Goal 1

Provide a garden area to facilitate the production of healthy food in the community.


-Promote interest in gardens

-Grow vegetables for the local food banks and local citizens

-Provide garden space

-Provide physical resurces for garden program

-Provide education/training


Goal II

Provide programs to encorage gardening for personal and community health


-Provide a graden therapy place

-Provide a community gathering place

-Provide appropriate outreach support for each project

-Provide education concerning gardening for personal and community health, including mental, social, cultural and environmental considerations.

-Encourage intergenerational contacts
