SAN DIEGO VA VETERANS THERAPY GARDEN

Over 45% of volunteer veterans come from a rural background so that they have it in their “roots” and it is a place they can come back to and feel normal and good about themselves.  This proposed therapeutic garden would provide a “transition assistance program” at the San Diego V.A. Healthcare System (VASDHS) with a network association with the Chula Vista Nature Center that has already agreed to provide “Master Composter” Certification Training free for all veterans who volunteer for composting activities and training.  This therapeutic garden and composting activities would provide the participating volunteer veterans an opportunity to acquire the “Master Composter Certificate” and allows them to be able to put something in the ground and watch it evolve in front of them.  They will know that they were the ones that created and nurtured that change, and will benefit from the individual plots that they have voluteered to nurture and will have a crop of vegetables or fruit to take with them as a graduation gift, along with a "Master Composter" Certificate.

High School students and Eagle Scouts have participated in the composting activities during the summer break.
