You can grow your own food. We can help.

Red Hill Learning Garden

Our Red Hill Elementary School Learning Garden is an organic garden in the middle of Orange County (North Tustin) CA with the mission of providing a nurturing, hands-on environment for students to learn to grow food, as well as providing an education on sustainable farming practices and healthy food options. This mission is consistent with Sow it Forward's goals.

We have over 80 parent and grandparent volunteers to take each classroom on scheduled monthly visits, work on clean up day, or operate the garden (e.g., worm manager, correspondence, spring lesson, and other managers). I have observed three key things in my years of volunteering in the garden: 1) students will try new vegetables (e.g., raw beets and broccoli, radish sandwiches, fuyu persimmons) that they will not try at home or are not offered at home, 2) they “get” the connection between growing the vegetables and the food that arrives on their dinner plate, and 3) concepts such as healthy eating taught in the classroom take on more relevance when students grow the healthy foods and they in turn ask their parents for them at home.
