East Haddam Food Bank Victory Garden
I read an article about "Plant a Row for the Hungry" and wanted to do my part. But my small property is heavily treed.
Across the street sat a vacant school, with a sunny front yard. I knew where I wanted to sow.
I spoke with the volunteers at the Food Bank to see if they were open to the idea of a Community Garden just for the Food Bank. They showed me what they had in fresh produce for the week (2 cucumbers & 3 green peppers). They thought a vegetable garden was a wonderful idea.
Now I really wanted to do this.
I was new to town and did not know how my idea would be received. I went to a few Town meetings and pressed my case to use Town property to establish a East Haddam Food Bank "Victory Garden". I found a receptive audience in the Selectmen & the East Haddam Green Committee.
Donations to the Garden have been coming in ever since.
Now neighboring towns have planted Food Bank gardens.
Local farms are donating produce.
I've met so many wonderful people while spreading the word.
