The Nature School Garden Project
The Nature School Garden is designed to be a learning experience in permaculture and organic gardening. The Nature School is located at the Source Farm Ecovillage in the community of Johns Town, St. Thomas, Jamaica. The school offers an alternative educational model to traditional schools in Jamaica by offering our students experiential learning and practical life skills. The Nature School is a nurturing learning environment that inspires curiosity and creativity. We maximize student potential by fostering inquiry based learning while focusing on environmental issues and natural living. The students will be responsible for the day to day maintenance of the garden, under supervision from our in house organic farmer, classroom teachers and permaculture/ agriculture experts that reside within the Ecovillage. The goal is for the students to have an onsite learning lab to raise awareness of issues such as sustainable farming practices and food security and to build practical life skills. In Johns Town, over 80% of the land is fit for agricultural use, yet less than 20% of homes have a garden that can sustain a 3-4 person house. The Nature School Garden, hopes to provide opportunities for greater food security for the residents of Johns Town, by introducing their children to the importance of self sustainability, while providing tangible experience in food production that can be used to create their own gardens at home.
KGI is a nonprofit community of over 30,000 people who are growing some of our own food and helping others to do the same.
