Montessori Day School Garden

Montessori Day School is a private 501-c3 nonprofit school in North Charleston, South Carolina. Our school garden is a daily part of our curriculum; we believe that knowledge, experience, and responsibility of the outdoor environment is crucial for the education of the whole child. We have small vegetable garden located directly on the playground. This location allows the children the ability to observe and maintain their garden on a daily basis. We grow seasonal and organic fruits and veggies. The children compost every day, and it is through composting that we create soil for our garden. We also have two school chickens...which provide lovely fertilizer! We have been able to harvest enough food throughout the school year to provide part of our daily snack and cooking projects at school.

The goal of our school garden is to continue maintenance, planting, and harvesting of fruits and vegetables. This will allow continued experience based learning, development of a deep understanding of the outdoor environment, and daily access for families to organic produce. It is also a goal of the lower elementary students to create a student run farmer's market. The farmer's market would allow the children to offer school grown produce to not only Montessori Day School families, but other families in North Charleston as well.
