Micheltorena School and Community Garden

The Micheltorena School and Community Garden is the product of a collaboration between community members, LAUSD and the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council in Los Angeles. Located in Title 1 Micheltorena Elementary, and through a lease agreement with LAUSD open both to the students and the community at large, the garden has become a center of sorts for the neighborhood, a green beacon on Sunset Blvd, and an experiment in communal local food and flower production, plus tending chickens and a rabbit, a diverse environment for healthy soil, insects and pollinators, an incubator of ideas about healthy living, a healing meeting place,  outdoor classroom and experiential environmental stewardship. Our composting program takes advantage of the left overs of the local farmer's market as well as the donations from local businesses and community members. The garden is open to all school classes, K-6, and the garden volunteers work in tandem with the teachers to incorporate garden lessons into the curriculum, covering biology, science and art. The garden is open on Saturdays to all neighbors to volunteer, meet likeminded individuals, take classes, participate in special projects and celebrations. In the spring and summer a weekly potluck is open to all.
