You can grow your own food. We can help.

Learning by Growing

The Bennington Early Childhood Center is a private, not for profit, early childhood education center serving approximately 60 children in the greater Bennington, Vermont area.  With the Sow it Forward grant we will be able to construct two new raised beds (like the photo submitted) for our preschool children to experience the benefits of growing thier own vegetables.  We believe that when children have the experience of planting and growing their own food they are not only more likely to eat the products of their efforts, but also more likely to continue to grow their own food for the rest of their lives.

Four and a half years ago we had to move from one site to another and in doing so had to leave behind a beautiful 800 square foot, fenced garden.  Each year that we have been at our new location, we have slowly added more and more gardening to our curriculum, but still have a ways to go to get to where we want to be.  This grant will allow us to increase our garden (photos above) to almost five times its current size.  We will be able to grow a greater variety as well as a greater quantity of food.

In addition to the benefits of growing and eating our own food we also want to teach our children about sharing our excess with others.  There is a local Meals on Wheels agency that provides meals for hundreds of elderly people in our community.  Sharing our bounty with them will not only teach us the importance of sharing with other, but it will also provide them with fresh produce to use in their meal production and help them keep their food costs down.  We hope to reach at least 40 more people through this outreach.
