You can grow your own food. We can help.

Lake Region Takes Root

Lake Region Takes Root (LRTR) is a 1.5 acre community garden which grows fresh local foods for families in need. Produce is grown by both community volunteers and food recipients. Fresh fruits and vegetables are grown to increase access to healthy foods and are donated directly to families from the Women's Infant and Children's program of Otter Tail County, Fergus Falls Community Food Shelf, A Place to Belong, and Matthew House.

Community residents and food recipients volunteer at the garden twice a week to plant, water, weed, and harvest foods. We hold 2-4 large group work days during the summer to build upon the infrastructure of the garden.

During the summer of 2014 we will be doing educational seminars at the garden to increase community engagement in the garden and inspire others to grow their own foods. We are using multiple methods of growing foods so that community members can determine what best meets their individual needs.

Families served are receiving education about the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables in their daily diets, learning gardening skills, food preparation and food preservation.

By working with young families in this capacity we are impacting the next generation towards systemic changes in our community and long-term healthier lifestyle changes.

We are currently growing foods at 5% of our land capacity and plan to increase that capcity to 50% during the 2014 growing season.
