Jay Area Community Shelf Vegetable and Herb Garden
The Jay Area Community Food Shelf and Gardens, serves 5 local, rural towns, and are an essential component to our commitment to serving those in need in the Jay area community. The Jay Area Community Food Shelf consists of 175 families, in addition to 20 seniors in the Jay area weekly food shelf site. Our immediate goals is to have our seniors partner with our local elementary school children to provide a basis for providing sustainable, healthier food choices. The project consists of a community vegetable and herb garden to supplement the Jay Area Food Shelf with fresh vegetables and herbs. This project will enhance the existing gardens at the Town Hall with topsoil, organic mulch, manure, and fertilizer. In addition, an offsite garden will provide increased productivity for vegetables serving the Jay Area Community Food Shelf and Senior Program.
This project will directly benefit the Jay Area Community Food Shelf, and senior's weekly lunch program, which serves 5 rural community consisting of Jay, North Troy, Troy, Westfield and Lowell. The Jay Focus Group wishes to increase the amount of fresh produce in our existing offside vegetable garden, by adding a second garden next to Jay Town Hall/Commuity Center/Jay Area Food Shelf.
KGI is a nonprofit community of over 30,000 people who are growing some of our own food and helping others to do the same.
