Holy Cross Primary School Kitchen Garden
The children who attend Holy Cross Primary live in an inner city urban area with mainly tenement housing, many have no outdoor space for recreational purposes. The playground as it currently exists has very few green areas. From questioning our pupils, parents and staff as well as partner agencies, we identified that there is a need for encouraging our children to engage with the outdoors and use this to enhance learning.
We intend to give our children opportunities to access outside space in the form of an outdoor classroom, sensory area and kitchen garden. We will engage our parents in the project by encouraging parental involvement in the outdoor lessons. We also have plans to work with the local nursery and secondary schools in this project.
We aim to build a Kitchen Garden in which our children will be taught about Eco awareness, sustainability and caring for the environment, as well as how to plant, tend, grow and harvest edible crops. The children will then expend upon this experience by learning to cook their harvested food.
Classes will be timetabled to plant, feed, cultivate and grow their own crops in the Kitchen Garden. The classes will also have regular opportunities to use the outdoor classroom and sensory area for daily teaching and learning session. Parents and carers will be invited to assist as much as possible in both the growing and cooking of crops.
KGI is a nonprofit community of over 30,000 people who are growing some of our own food and helping others to do the same.
