Foodie Group Permablitz

The Foodie group is a sub-committee of the BATI organization which seeks to build a more resilient food system in Waldo County (Maine).  One way in which we do this is by organizing community permablitzes.    A permablitz is a gathering that creates or adds to gardens and edible landscapes, shares skills related to permaculture (permaculture is a theory of ecological design that seeks to develop sustainable human settlements and agricultural systems. The systems are modeled on natural ecosystems.) and sustainable living, builds community, and shares food and fun.  Other names for a permablitz could be: gardenblitz, garden project, work party, crop mob, lawn conversion, etc.

During a permablitz, a group of volunteers gathers to work to transform a lawn into a food-producing garden.  In partnership with the homeowner, the Foodie group helps to plan/design the project, recruit volunteers, gather resources, send out press releases, arrange a potluck, and supply snacks.   In one day, a lawn is transformed into a future food-producing garden, relationships are built, and skills are shared. We are increasing our local resilience one back yard (or front yard) at a time.  All of the food grown in the garden is for the homeowner to use and enjoy as they please.

We generally help to organize 3 permablitzes every summer .
