You can grow your own food. And we can help!

Field to Fork Elementary School Pizza Gardens

Field to Fork is a community collaboration between the Mecklenburg County Health Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Fuel Pizza Cafe and LandSculptors, LLC, a local landscaping business that brings pizza gardens to elementary classrooms. Field to Fork promotes child wellness by growing a healthy pizza garden with elementary age children.  Pizza is an effective vehicle to demonstrate how delicious fruits and vegetables are. Through a pizza garden, students experience in the entire process of growing food, from planting seeds to tending the plants to finally enjoying fresh produce on their own whole-wheat pizza. The program promotes increased exposure to healthy eating as well as safe food preparation and patience and responsibility. The garden setting also offers countless hands-on opportunities to integrate science, math, writing, history and cultural studies.

Field to Fork is seeking these grant resources to support the creation of pizza gardens at Albemarle Road, Bain, Lebanon Road, Newell, Statesville Road, and Windsor Park Elementary Schools. None of these schools has grown a pizza garden with Field to Fork nor do they have extensive gardening programs in place. Participation in Field to Fork helps establish sustainable gardening efforts while increasing school-wide excitement for the garden and healthy eating. 110 elementary students and 5 teachers will directly benefit from Field to Fork gardening, nutrition and culinary lessons as well as a field trip to make healthy pizzas with garden produce. Schools will benefit from newly established garden sites and resources and tools provided through this grant. The message of healthy eating and safe food preparation will also be spread throughout the schools and to student families. Pizza gardens will encourage more positive attitudes toward fruits and vegetables as well as increased willingness to try these foods outside of the school environment.  The gardens will provide new settings to teach about healthy living.
