You can grow your own food. And we can help!

Community Gardens of Santa Clarita Outreach Project

Our Community Gardens of Santa Clarita Outreach Project was established in 2011. Our mission was to give back to the community at large by growing fresh organic produce and donating the produce to food banks.   In 2011,  one 10’x20’ raised bed  was dedicated to this mission and with the help of the garden members we donated 1100 lbs. of fresh produce to the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry.   The SCV Food Pantry supports 800-1000 needy families,   half the families have children. Another 1100 senior citizens receive food through their distribution to low-income residents.   During 2012 the committee expanded to a second 10’x20’ raised bed and expanded the donations to include a second organization.  The Help the Children organization serves families who do not qualify for government assistance.  This organization serves with no government funding and through community donations.  The over 8,000 yearly food allotments are given to low income families. The families receive allotments once a week.  CG of SC Outreach Committee has  worked to provide upwards of 1800 lbs split between the two organizations over the last three years.  During 2012 and 2013 our committee worked to develop healthy soil in the raised beds, plant and harvest weekly.  The members of the committee record the weight and type of produce prior to transporting the harvest to the non-profit organizations.  Spring/summer donations consist of sweet peppers, squash (zucchini, acorn, crock neck, summer and winter squash, tomatoes, cucumber, eggplant and green beans.  Our fall/winter donations include many different salad greens, mustard and collard greens, cabbage, spinach, kale, cilantro, peas and root vegetables.   Our goal is to continue to support those in our community who do not have the financial means to supply their families with fresh organic choices for healthy diets.     The funding from this grant will help support this goal.
