Community Garden South Suburban Food Coop and St. Irenaeus, Park Forest, Illinois
Our community garden has just completed the third season of tremendous growth! The garden was begun by volunteers from the South Suburban Food Cooperative on land belonging to St. Irenaeus Church, both of which are located in Park Forest, Illinois. The garden is organized and worked by a group of dedicated volunteers.
Park Forest is located approximately 35 miles south of Chicago. Our town, like many small towns, has been especially hard hit by the economy. Many of our residents are unemployed and facing foreclosure. We are also struggling to bring a grocery store back to the area. Hard times indeed!
In the spring of 2013, St. Irenaeus opened a small food pantry. In the beginning it served approximately 50 families. Throughout the year, the number of families served by the pantry has grown to 300.
The spring of 2014 will find us with a renewed effort to bring fresh fruit and vegetables to those in need. The pantry has a real need to supplement dry and canned goods with fresh, healthy fruit and vegetables. In years past, we have grown everything from acorn squash to zucchini! Our goal in 2014 is to meet the need of the growing numbers that benefit from the food pantry.
We know that passing the hat, as we have done in prior years, will not suffice. Our small bake sales and other fundraisers, are just not meeting the great need of our community. At this time, we are seeking your grant for this very worthy cause.
KGI is a nonprofit community of over 30,000 people who are growing some of our own food and helping others to do the same.
