You can grow your own food. And we can help!

Cedarview Middle School Garden Beds

Two years ago we built three raised garden beds at Cedarview Middle School in Barrhaven (Ottawa), Ontario. We are a grade 5-8 school with a population of around 750 students. This spring we would like to expand our hands-on learning experience by building two more garden beds. Our Grade 8 students calculated and built our first three garden beds. They have been a huge success not only by supporting our curriculum at all grade levels, but it also gives our students the opportunity to learn some healthy life skills which we hope will continue to grow with their family and within our community. The gardens helps to meet curriculum goals in a fun and active way, it promotes locally grown food, and fosters healthy eating habits. The gardens require a lot of maintenance, which is supported by our students, parents, teachers and volunteers. It is wonderful to watch the students get excited harvesting vegetables that they took the time to care for. Many of these students do not know where vegetables come from and have never tasted a fresh picked garden product. This expanding of our garden...our outdoor classroom, will help build and grow these healthy learning experiences.
