Brookland Academy Children's Garden

Our goal is to have children at the Brookland Academy (BA), a pre-school located on the campus of Brookland Baptist Church (BBC), in West Columbia, SC, excited about and interested in growing and eating healthy fruits and vegetables.  BBC is located within heavily-minority Census Tracts 203, 205.05, 205.09 and 206.01 and the average poverty rate among African-Americans in that area is 28%.  This urban area is classified as a food-desert, with minimal access to supermarkets and fresh produce. BBC is a large church and is extremely active in the community where it is located.

We hope the kids, having engaged in hands-on gardening activities, will go home and tell their parents they want more vegetables and fruit, instead of processed food.  We hope that more families will start shopping at our Community Farmers Market.  Or better yet, that they would like to start a garden at home.  We envision the children leading the way in their households and encouraging their parents to purchase more fruits and vegetables leading to healthier families and combating South Carolina’s high rate of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart attacks and strokes.
