Thank you very much Glenn and Salma for organizing this. I'm sure that there are many other gardeners in our network who could help with more seeds (or financial donations), if you explain where they can be sent. I imagine that the farmers and gardeners of Pakistan would be most interested in open-pollinated seeds as opposed to hybrids. Is that correct?
Hi Salma I think this proves that seeds can be sent through the post, which to my mind was always slightly in doubt. I am surprised at the speed with which they have reached you. It only took 7 days. I hope that this will be the start of many more seeds winging their way to you, to help in solving some of the problems that beset your country at the present time. Good Luck.
Should we tape a list of the seeds on the outside of the package? Or any other labels? I have held back untill your package made it though. Thank You, Joel.
Hi Joel My wife posted the package for me. She said she had to fill a form in at the post office which stated what was in the package. I am not sure if they attached this form to the package. It will be interesting to see if the US customs are any different from the British, in terms of allowing seeds to be posted. It will also be interesting to compare the length of time taken for the package to arrive in Pakistan. Thankyou Joel.
A part of custom declaration form which Glenn's wife filled at post office is attached to the package. On it content is declared as :SEEDS.
Thanks Glenn, your initiation is gaining momentum .
I can not find Salma's address to send seeds to- I also would like to know what types of vegetable (other than being open pollinated) seeds are the best for her climate and needs. Besides some I have collected, I am seeing some on special right now from the local garden centers- so I would like to contribute. Still having trouble nagivating my way around the different groups and blogs. Thanks, Susan
Once again my address: ----------------------------------- Salma Kamal Farm No 6-B, Street 11, Chak Shazad Farms, Islamabad, Pakistan. ----------------------------------- If possible ,registered post would be preferable for sure and safe delivery. Both hybrid and open pollinated will do.As long as they are viable. Pakistan climatic zone is formed under strong influence of monsoons. The climate of Pakistan is mostly tropical except for the northwestern part where it is subtropical and dry. Following vegetables are grown here. Carrot,Cauliflower,Cabbage,Chilies,Cucumber,Garli,Onion,Peas,Potato,Radish,Spinach,Sweet Tomato,Turnip, beet root, broccoli,Brussels sprouts,.Button mushroom,Celery,Chinese mushroom,Choongan ( Caralluma tuberculata),Clover ( Sengi),Egg plant,.Pursalane,. Arum.,.(Colocaria esculenta).,Bitter gourd ,Okra, French Bean,Fennel-bulb,Globe Artichoke, pumpkin,Shallot Green, snake gourd.,snake beans.,Water melon, sweet potatoes.
All credit goes to Glenn for taking the first step. His initiation is gaining momentum. Please send seeds or related items on this address: ----------------------------------- SALMA KAMAL. FARM NO 6-B, STREET 11, CHAK SHAHZAD FARMS, ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN. ------------------------------------------ Open pollunited seed as well as hybrid will do but preference would be hybrid as they are more viable. About financial donation I will let you know where to send and how it should be best utilise in couple of days.
This sounds like a great idea -- a way to help the people affected by the devastation in Pakistan feed themselves for months/years to come, rather than a one-time, pre-packaged food donation that may or may not be healthful/nutritious/culturally appropriate. One question I have is whether or not Pakistanis have access to arable land where they can plant these seeds (with some assurance that they will be able to continue farming that land). If their former homes/land has been wiped out by the flooding, where will these seeds be planted?? Are there organizations working to establish community gardens? Thanks for your work and ideas!
MeganXW! Yes its is a great Idea. Pakistan is basicly an agriculture country with about 70% of people involved in this trade in one way or other. Agriculture is back bone of our economy and fed by the mighty Indus river. Pakistan has rich agricultue history dating back to Mohenjo-daro and Harrapa civilization 2600 bc. The Indus Valley Civilization was a Bronze age civilization (3300–1300 BCE; mature period 2600–1900 BCE) which was centred mostly in the western part of the Indian Subcontinent and which flourished around the Indus river basin . Between 1800 and 1700 BCE, civilization on the Indus Plain all but vanished. What befell these people is unknown. One suspected cause is a shift in the Indus River. Another is that people dammed the water along the lower portion of the Indus River without realizing the consequences: temporary but ruinous flooding up river, flooding that would explain the thick layers of silt thirty feet above the level of the river at the site of Mohenjo-daro. The river Indus runs a course through the Ladakh district of Jammu and Kashmir and then enters Northern Areas (Gilgit-Baltistan), flowing through the North in a southerly direction along the entire length of Pakistan to merge into the Arabian Sea near the port city of Karachi in Sind. For indus valley people farming is the trade of their forefathers. These people are now returning to their land and continue farming. The entire Indus valley has avery rich and fertile land.
Obviously, I am able to send seeds myself. But I had thoughts of spreading the idea online and at the local sources of seeds, such as the Hardware Stores, Canadian Tire Stores, anywhere they sell seeds. Get permission to post a poster and place a box or something below for the donations to assist Pakistan in this manner. I will see what I can do on that end. In the meantime, thanks for the idea and the address! :) With love, from Ontario, Canada.
Thanks for your efforts and input.
very nice (as long as every seed goes out to some NEEDY and none kept yourself, as most of us do here in Pakistan.)
As you said ,many people might indulge in such things ,but I am not among those most people. I have already handed over seeds to three deserving families.See blogs. I will keeping transpsrency at every step. There should be no doubts in mind of all those who are contributing.I am answerable to all those who are contributing. Those who cheat, avoid transparency and have shady addresses and names. I am law abiding citizen of Islamabad(pakistan) and totally commited to kitchen gardening and also involve in promation at local level. I am on this site for past four years and contibuting in form blogs and forums. That shows my level of commitment and seriousness. The good thing about this site is that it gives, every one opportunity to promate kitchen gardening at your community level. so instead of spreading negative thoughts ,why dont you also start this programme in your local area and do some thing worth while for this organization.
Dear Salma, I found a company that has the perfect seeds for you! They are called Homestead Supply, and I found non GMO, open pollinated seeds, a nice variety of vegetables too. I should receive them this week and have them on their way to you by next. What is with this site this weekend, with so many unkind words?? I do not know who the person is that suggested that you might be keeping the donations for yourself, but I do not like that kind of negativity. I am glad you are part of this wonderful site, and I am glad I found the site, and am able to help you help your fellow countrymen. Keep up your great work. And I will let you know when the seeds are on the way. IF any one else wants to help- I think this company has a good deal for seeds, and they are packaged in such a way that they can be safely stored as well. Green Blessings, Susan
I, for one, have never doubted Salma's integrity and honesty in her effort to distribute seeds to those in need. Ignore any doubts regarding this Salma, you don't need to defend yourself in the eyes of your many supporters here.
This is about sharing and caring. From ones that have, to ones that do not. Salma is doing a sharing, because she cares, like us. But, if she gets many packages mailed to her, I for one do not mind if she takes what SHE needs too. If she has, she will not take. If she needs, then she can have. No one has ever put a limit on Salma, saying that it must all be given away...have they? We have an inherent trust here. Trust that Salma really wants to help others and trust that the seeds will be used and shared. Your comment will not help the situation in any way. It helps build mistrust in others that wish to help...the battle of prejudiced thoughts against Pakistani peoples. You may know others that would do this, maybe you are speaking truth that it is a common thing. Unless you know Salma, you can not judge her intentions or motives. People that donate, as a rule, must have trust in the person doing the collecting and distribution. Your little "seed of doubt" is very harmful, to both Salma and to anyone that NEEDS seeds there. It is all it takes for us to not send and assist. Would it not be more "prudent" "wise" to message Salma with your questions privately? What if you yourself, have these doubts, but Salma is totally devoted and honorable? You are causing doubts and even slandering Salma's honor and name here. What if we send and they are not shared out? Will it hurt us, the senders? No. We are not shipping massive amounts over, we will lose only a small amount of monies. But the unmeasurable amount of damages your little comment will cause, to receiving support from all around the world, that is enormous!
I made my comment in reference to the person who was insinuating that Salma was somehow not being honest- I also do not see anything wrong with her keeping and using some of the seeds- she and her family have needs too. But the comment from the other person from Pakistan SUGGESTING that Salma had anything but good intentions upset me. I hope I did not write anything to contribute to the problem. By the way, the name of the company with the excellent seeds and prices, is Hometownseeds.com. I have older seeds that I was going to send, but I decided that this was a perfect combo for what the people would need for both a variety of veggies and good seeds to save. I think that Salma's effort is incredible and I am glad that she is part of this group so we can help too. I do not know what is causing the several different negative comments that have been spinkled about the various discussions, but I for one, would like to get back to the loving, helping and supporting group that I normally find here. The planets are doing some weird things today and it effects the way we treat each other-so lets all think before we write. And keep the wonderful positive goals of this organization in mind. Blessings to all, Susan

I hope that I did not say anything that contributed to the negativity when I wrote in response to the person who suggested that Salma might be anything but the wonderful, giving person that she is. I also agree that she has the right to use the seeds as she sees fit- her family has needs too! I hope what ever has been causing all the negativity that has cropped up over many of the posts, stops. The planets are doing strange things, so lets all think before we write, and above all keep up the support for Salma and her work! Blessings to everyone! Susan
HAVE NO IDEA WHY MY FIRST COMMENT ENDED UP BEING POSTED THREE TIMES- WHEN i THOUGHT I LOST IT, THEN MADE ANOTHER COMMENT. SUSAN
Hi SGMarr ...... don't like to go into arguments. ...... ...... But here is a different perspective (after 911 and after massive American-dollar aid to government officials) we are not what we were 10 years ago !!! ...... Now ...... each-and-every person in a position has become corrupt. A chain-reaction has started from top-to-bottom. (now the popular Pakistani motto is, you can't survive without doing corruption, or live life miserably ) each day media is full of allegations of billions of corruption in state-run-organizations, The most corrupt person (after all his corruptions) is allowed to become a President-of-Pakistan by the system (read America and global powers). ...... ...... on the other hand, Pakistani people dieing miserably like-insects (in floods, in bomb-blasts, in drone-attacks, by-food-prices) and people in power-and-position are not even spending-tax-collected money to save lives. ...... ...... THESE FLOODS WERE NOT SUPPOSE TO KILL AND DISPLACE SO MANY, THIS TRAGEDY WAS MAN-MADE TO KILL POOR AND GET MONEY as foreign aid. (just search-Google and read how rich-powerful government persons flooded poor-people-lands) we watch here on TV every day how people in power not letting the foreign-aid go to needy, cos in this way more-aid might not come, keep the people dieing so more funds keep coming-in, we hear, how Pakistani-Embassy-office in NY, not care about floods-victims or flood-funds read-this http://www.geo.tv/8-26-2010/70521.htm or just search-Google "pakistan flood corruption" ...... ...... Pakistanis are the most charity giver in the world (by some survey) but now masses in Pakistan are heart-broken, mistrust is at its peek specially towards position and power holders. ...... ...... if Salma is not among those "most-Pakistanis", why i wouldn't be happy ?, i am happy. the intention was that if you are among those man-eaters, we are also here to disrupt and spoil your show. ...... ...... i won't suggest not to help the needy (actually that is very kind of you all), but i suggest keep-questioning about your donations and keep-making people answerable, Salma has posted pictures, which is good, let every seed-pack go with a photo also. ...... ...... anyways, hope no arguments will follow. that is just an individual perspective.
Corruption is everywhere & everyone is tempted. I trust Salma or I would not send any seeds to her. I think she knows best, because she is on the ground, in country. I am not there, I give freely, for her to do as she see fit. I can do no more, I will do no less. I can do so little for so many, but I have faith in Salma. May God bless her seven folds for this work she has taken on.
Dear Susan,Maxine,SGMarr,Joel, Glenn and Kitchen gardeners .org, Thak you all for placing trust in me. I truly fee honored for all the words of support I am getting. I will never let you down. Word of dicouragment will not deter me, in in fact it will add fuel to my determination to help and reach out . I also beleive in transparency at every step and would love to answer any question. Mr supergardener You can label pakistan as most corrupt country, and give a very bleak picture of all that is happening in Pakistan but dont forget that there are equally very dedicated people like Imran Khan,Abdul Sattar Edhi, and many other individuals and non-profit social welfare organization who are working day and night for the well being of people. I am not a part of goverment ,nor a man eater, just a very simple kitchen gardener .I live by this saying of William Penn I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again. I under stand you purpose on this site is ...as quoted by you" if you are among those man-eaters, we are also here to disrupt and spoil your show".
@ SalmaTrying to hide unimaginable corruption in the country behind Imran Khan's face ?.so Naive of you.and why you want to hide this open-truth that corruption is the new religion of Pakistan ?and if you really "i believe in transparency at every step and would love to answer any question." then why you want to say only this that "i have received some seeds and has given to 3 persons"you should not ask people to ask you if there donations reached the needy, rather, you must put a list of donated seeds along with the owner name, and keep the list updated.and then a column which shows the needy person name/details/photowhy this documentation makes you irritated ?A USD pakistani-rupee ratio is 86:1 and GBP is at 130:1 !!!
Please go through all my blogs and forums before you accuse me of hiding. There I have also written about amount I have received and and names of families and picture whom these seeds were handed over . But still for your satisfaction I will reblog post names/details/photo. YOu have not read carefull what I wrote .I never said pakistan is corruption free but there are equally good people here also. Please fill up your blank status so people may know more about you and your interest.
"Supergardener" - you are really begining to make me very upset and angry with your remarks. What are YOU doing to make this world a better place???? Instead of wasting your energy giving Salma a hard time, (which is beginning to look to me like you have a personal issue and are using this site as a weapon against Salma), why are YOU not doing something to help? I was always told by my parents, if you do not have something nice to say, then do not say it. It would be one thing if you were really protecting innocent people or exposing lies and corruption, based on FACT, but I, for one, have really had enough of the negativity. You are the irritating one, not Salma. Lets see something positive please! Susan
.
Enough already - I think we're taking this person entirely too seriously and Super is enjoying it. Let's not waste anymore energy on this, not worth it, we have much more positive things to focus on.
I agree, we have a egotistical, self centered person who is enjoying causing a problem, I do not know why they are even allowed to continue commenting on this site. I had said all I am going to. I think Salma knows we are behind her, and that this negativity will not stop our efforts to help. Let "supergardener" find some other people to mess with.
Maxine, I aplaud your stance as I usually do, and this is my last comment on this strain and will probably not even read new posts about it. This site is about gardening and people sharing knowlege and experiences. Stay natural, David
Hey Supergardener, I love what you just wrote- people are not aware just how aid money rarely does help the people who it supposed to, and our man made "improvement" projects- especially damming rivers- never seem to be for the benefit of all. I think America is not spreading justice and liberty anymore - we are spreading the market for corporations. And I know that is dangerously close to starting a whole political strain, but my purpose for Bringing that up is this: WE are NOT the politicans, and we are just individuals who are trying to share ideas and in this case, help a good person with a great idea. I think for the world to become a better place, it takes efforts like we, as a group, are making to get seeds to Salma. She will do a great job in making sure they go where they are needed most- whether it be her own family or a neighbors. There are enough problem creators, lets just stick to being part of the solution. Blessings to all! Susan
.
I AGREE! We should always try to be apart of the solution or get out of those who are trying way. I remember the drought in the 1987(?), farmer in the Midwest sent hay to us in the Southeast. A few years later, they had a drought & we sent them hay for thier animals. This is being a good neighbor. Saama is part of the KGI Family, so we should be good neighbors or get out the way. At least that how I see it. Joel
And your examples are inspiring - both the farmers exchanging hay in seasonal times of bounty & need and your own daily assistance to people in the KGI Family ...
You really give the right information that I am looking for. I found this blog post through Google and I love your contents here. Hi Maxine, glad to see you on here! How are things going for you? We have an early spring and I just have too much paperwork ( and a new puppy) to take advantage of it. With the puppy, I am going to have to rethink my whole garden design anyway. Green Blessings, Susan
Hi Susan! As to early spring, was 23 degrees here last night. Trying to avoid rushing into starting seedlings too soon that need warmth. Am excited about plans for permaculture this spring. Am tearing out some useless shrubbery in my front yard and have fruit and nut trees going in with "guild" plantings in mind, perusing Gaias Garden book this morning for ideas. Also getting into sprouted wheat for baking. Sprouted whole grain wheat flours digest the same as a vegetable, and not as a starch, making all baked goods more easily assimilated, increases the vitamin and mineral content and lowers the gluten content. Soak organic hard red wheat 6-12 hours, rinse, drain. Repeat rinse drain in 8 hours, 3-4 times (until tiny sprouts appear). Dry thoroughly, will store indefinitely until grind for flour, then use within a day or two. Book Sprouted Baking by Jamie Quinn for recipes but don't need, just substitute flour for any baking. Bulk bins in some stores have the wheat. So it goes, keeps me off the streets at least : )
