S 510 - The Food Safety Modernization Act

Nov 17, 2010

There is a chance that the food safety legislation under consideration in Congress for the past year and a half will move forward this week. The U.S. Senate may vote on S 510 - The Food Safety Modernization Act as soon as today (Wednesday, Nov 17).

If you are a US citizen, please contact your Senators and ask them: 1. to support the manager's amendment, and 2. to support the Tester/Hagan amendment. The manager's amendment includes six important improvements from the original bill that would provide guidance to FDA on how to move forward on food safety issues. The Tester/Hagan amdnement would limit FDA's authority for farms with less than $500,000 in sales, marketing in-state within 400 miles of the farm.

These two proposed amendments have broad support within the US sustainable agriculture community and deserve the support of kitchen gardeners as well.
