Vestal Community Garden in Portland, Oregon
The Vestal Community Garden is a partnership between Vestal K-8, a Portland Public School and the City of Portland Parks and Recreation Community Gardens. 1/3 of the garden is for Vestal School use with the remaining 2/3 for community gardeners. To create the garden, over 15,000 square feet of asphalt was removed, converting an impervious space into a natural area that treats and retains stormwater. The garden opened in March 2010 and since then Vestal students and community gardeners have actively transformed the once barren space into a vibrant garden.
