Master of the Garden

Jun 25, 2014

Anthony is a hard, hard worker in the classroom, but learning doesn't come easily to him there. Outside, though, he is the master. The Belvedere Elementary Edible Gardens (Fairfax County, VA) are where he shines most brightly.

Anthony is the first to notice whatever we have learned about: He was the first to notice and identify leaf patterns of the sunflowers we planted, the first to notice peas growing in our garden and, during our conservation unit, was the first to suggest that we go out and pick up trash.

He asks questions about what's happening in our gardens and asks for help researching answers. In the gardens, he can more easily and quickly see his hard work paying off and sometimes, we have drawn upon that experience to help remind him that his hard work will pay off in the classroom too.
