Help KGI Win $50,000 for the Homegrown Cause!
Luke Skywalker vs the Death Star. Forest Gump vs Low Expectations. Babe the Pig vs the Frying Pan.
There's nothing that Hollywood loves more than an inspiring story of an underdog overcoming big odds and adversaries to accomplish something remarkable. In a way, it's KGI's story too. While a tiny nonprofit by most standard measures (budget, staff, office furniture, etc), we're managing to have a big impact because of the number of people we're able to mobilize into action when a great garden opportunity or threat arises. Whether it's engaging over 100,000 people to advocate for a kitchen garden at the White House or 30,000 for the right to grow food in one's own front yard, KGI is emerging as the one of the most important voices in the homegrown movement...the garden mouse that roared! We have a new opportunity between now and the end of the year to roar together and write our own Hollywood-esque underdog script. I've entered KGI into a nonprofit giving competition organized by Crowdrise.com where the top three finishers win $50,000,$30,000 and $20,000 and we're currently in 8th place out of about 200 causes. Once again, we're up against formidable odds as the competition is dominated by Hollywood stars and their own nonprofit causes which tend to be 10-20 times larger than we are (KGI has one staff member, i.e. yours truly, garden-mouse-in-chief). While we might not be as telegenic, famous or funny as actors Ian Somerhalder, Sophia Bush or Jonah Hill (whose causes are currently in 1st, 2nd and 5th place), I believe we have a chance because I believe in gardeners' ability to take something small and hopeful and grow it into something big and delicious. It's what we do!
If we can manage to hold onto our current ranking through today (Monday, November 26th), we will a $500 bonus from Crowdrise which goes a long way for a small nonprofit like us. But we need your help: actors Edward Norton and Seth Rogen are nipping at our underdog back paws in 11th and 12th place. And we only need $200 (4 donations of $50) to move past actress Olivia Wilde into 9th place!
Thanks for gardening and thanks for supporting KGI. Alone in our own back yards, we're doing something good. Together, we're accomplishing something great for the homegrown cause!
KGI is a nonprofit community of over 30,000 people who are growing some of our own food and helping others to do the same.
