Kauai Keiki Garden Program Sowing it Forward

Stewards of the Kauai Keiki Garden loving up the Taro
Jun 27, 2013

The stewards of the Kauai Keiki Garden are having lots of fun and learning a ton growing their own food and flowers in their garden plot.  The food they grow, they use to make healthy snacks during the class, and any abundance is sent home with them to share with their families. They love making salad, salad dressings and tea from the variety of plants they have growing in their plot.  They have even written up original recipes and shared them in a community cookbook.

Thanks to the sow it forward grant we were able to purchase harvest and wash bins and many kitchen tools to prepare the snacks with (such as cutting boards, knives, pots, a strainer, and some bowls).  The grant also allowed us to get hand trowels and cultivators for the keiki so that they can malama their garden, as well as a hose, sprinkler and timer for watering.  The kids really loved the magnifying glasses we got through the grant.  Looking at all of the different plant parts through the lenses really brought botany to life for them, and you can clearly see this through their drawings.  The kids are so grateful for their garden and the new supplies. A big thank you to Kitchen Gardeners International for helping to make this all possible.
