Baby Avea LOVES garden-fresh broccoli!
Our almost one-acre Meskwaki Senior Community Garden is located on the Meskwaki Settlement in Tama, IA. The garden has changed and grown a lot this year, and little miss Avea’s parents have had a lot to do with that. Her mother, who works as part of our umbrella program, Meskwaki Food Sovereignty Initiative, comes out to volunteer in the Senior Garden often, and has helped with planting, weeding, and harvesting. Avea’s father also comes to volunteer, bringing Baby Avea with him – she sits in the shade while he mows around the garden or tills up new spots for us to plant.
With their help and the help of all our volunteers and the KGI Sow It Forward grant, the Senior Garden has been expanding this year: we’ve planted more vegetables and a new small strawberry and raspberry patch. We’re particularly excited about our green beans – our seniors love green beans, and we’ve been harvesting 10-15 lbs. every other day of fresh green beans to take over to them! Spinach, lettuces, chard, kale, broccoli, cabbage, all have been producing bountifully. We are blessed.
The above photo was taken at a recent community meal held to celebrate the growing season and all that we have already harvested. Avea snatched up a piece of raw broccoli and enjoyed it for a good 5 minutes before it was taken to the compost. I don’t know, it must be all that time she spends with her parents in the garden, but this kid knows where the good food’s at =)
KGI is a nonprofit community of over 30,000 people who are growing some of our own food and helping others to do the same.
