Backyard Produce Garden
The Backyard Produce Garden is an all-volunteer food bank garden located in Poway, CA, just north of San Diego. It is located on the grounds of Sunshine Care Assisted Living, which donates the land, the water, and the expertise of its Director of Horticulture.
The garden is tended by about 50 volunteers from the surrounding community. Team members are retirees, working people, and special-needs groups, organized into small teams. Our volunteers range from beginners to master gardeners.
The garden is about 6000 square feet, with 5000 square feet of garden beds and a 1000-square foot orchard of small fruit trees. We follow organic gardening methods.
The garden operates year-round in our temperate climate. In the summer we grow tomatoes, squash, beans, peppers, carrots, onions, melons, and other summer herbs and vegetables. In the winter we grow broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce, and other cool-weather crops.
All produce from the garden is donated to a local charity called Friends and Family Community Connection (ffccsd.org), to be distributed to families and seniors in our community who are struggling to put healthy food on the table. The charity distributes the produce and uses it to set up free "farmers markets" at low-income apartment complexes. Residents are encouraged to try new things and taught how to use produce they may not be familiar with.
We run a small composting operation next to the garden to make good use of our green waste and recyle it back into the garden.
In addition to helping our neighbors in need, the garden is a source of friendship, camaraderie, and learning for the volunteers who tend it.
KGI is a nonprofit community of over 30,000 people who are growing some of our own food and helping others to do the same.
