Airport Heights Elementary School Garden

The mission of the Airport Heights Elementary School Garden is:

to help students gain real life experience with plant and gardening ecology

to beautiful the school grounds

to feed hungry children

The garden has been a beautiful and tasty addition to our school and neighborhood. We have grown carrots, potatoes, and many types of flowers. Over the past four years, we have built five 4’x8’ vegetable beds and one 2’x20’ flower bed.  Garden Club members have learned basic plant ecology and gardening concepts.  Students now know that carrots and potatoes have leaves!  Students have been able to observe the changes from seed to plant and then to flower. They have also learned about seed varieties; we planted 8 different types of carrots, some of them purple! Students have also learned to care for soil. Each year we mix in compost and discuss the nutrients that plants need.
